Green light for Swedish buses saves fuel

2008-04-04
Automatic green lights for buses gives lower fuel consumption and less emissions. And more passengers on the bus.

In the city of Luleå in Northern Sweden, the traffic authorities have gradually, since 2003, implemented Trivector's solution for giving priority to buses in intersections which have traffic lights. The bus is automatically given green light as it approaches the intersection, resulting in a smoother drive and an improved ability to keep time tables. Since 2003, an annual 4% decrease in fuel consumption over all the bus fleet is registered. This green light project has been combined with a policy to never let a bus leave the bus stop prior to the planned departure time. As a result, public bus travel in Luleå has increased with some 25% since 2003.
