Vemos – a traffic control system

Using Vemos, traffic controllers can monitor traffic and vehicle status in many ways, for example in a map view.

Vemos (from VEhicle MOnitoring System) contains different modules for traffic control.

Vemos does the following:

  • Provides information on the geographical position of each vehicle in operation
  • Shows deviations from the timetable for all vehicles in operation
  • Reports any malfunctions that occur in vehicles
  • Sends an alarm in case of emergency

Vemos communicates with the vehicles and then, in real-time, compiles and dispatches this information to traffic control and the travellers.
Vemos is based on cooperating programs and could be looked upon as three major parts: trafic control, analysis software and background software. Every part consists, in its turn, by one or more components which communicate via defined interfaces with other Vemos software and any external software.

Software components

These components are part of Vemos:

Traffic control

  • Vemos View is the traffic control application, which shows any vehicles that are delayed or too early, their location and in case anything serious happens (for example an emergency alarm). The information about traffic and vehicle status can be monitored and presented in different ways. Two of these are Line view and Map view.

Analysis software

  • Vemos Stat shows summarized statistics over how well the vehicles have kept their schedules. Furthermore, there are functions to show in a map view if the bus has taken a detour, validating time tables before they are taken into operation and more. There is also a possibility to revisit a single trip and see when the bus arrived to and left the bus stops. This is useful for managing customer complaints.
  • RAPP (Route Analysis Program Package) – a stand-alone program which analyzes, compiles and presents trip-time data: distances covered, door opening times, stop times, passengers getting on and off, and more.

Real time information to travellers

  • Vemos Web provides departure times in real time via web and mobile phone. Using Vemos Web – an addition to Vemos – travellers can get information on how long time it takes before a certain bus leaves a certain bus stop. The information is available over the internet and on a mobile phone.

Background software

  • Vemos Bas makes forecasts and distributes information between radio systems, bus stop information systems and traffic control systems. When a message arrives from a vehicle, Vemos Bas updates the forecast for the vehicle. The forecast is based on current time table matching and different catch-up parameters.
  • Vemos Radio handles the communication between the vehicle and the central system and traffic control.
  • In Vemos Setup the system parts are configured. This handles for example the import of traffic databases and configuration of included vehicles.
  • Vemos Startup supervises other programs and restarts them if needed.
  • Vemos Depot handles data transfer between vehicles in the depot and the central system. It is mainly new databases or programs to be deployed to the vehicles. The depot system also collects log files from the vehicles for analysis in RAPP (see above).

We also have broad experience of integrating Vemos and other programs with existing systems when required.
